Internal Audit -Opening Meeting

On Wednesday, 11th June 2025, the University of Embu (UoEm) conducted a three-day internal audit to assess compliance with Performance Contract (PC) and ISO standards. The Internal audit focused on evaluating various University departments and sections for adherence to the Quality Management System (QMS). The exercise followed a comprehensive ISO training attended by 113 staff members.

 

ISO Implementation Committee

The ISO Implementation Committee has the following Terms of Reference:
a) Oversee implementation of the ISO Standards in the University
b) Spearhead the review of QMS & ISMS Documentation
c) Receive and consider status reports on implementation of QMS & ISMS from the Directorate of Performance Management & ISO
d) Receive and evaluate Risk Assessment Reports
e) Recommend certification to other ISO Standards.

It is chaired by the Quality and Information Security Management Representative (QISMR) and is made up of 18 members;

Short Biography:
A professional teacher, lecturer and Trainer (ToT) with over 25 years’ experience at Secondary, College and University levels of education. A lead auditor for ISO 9001:2015 on Quality Management System and an internal auditor ISO/IEC 27001:2013 Standard on Information Security Management System. A  Quality champion and practitioner.

Experience:
Started as Liaison Officer in charge of Performance Contracting in a Teacher Training College before joining the then Embu University College (current University of Embu) in March 2013. Was appointed and served as Coordinator, Performance Contracting & ISO Certification from 2013-2016. Spearheaded the certification of the institution to ISO 9001:2008 by Kenya Bureau of Standards (KBS) on 2nd December 2014, a process that took less than one year. As a trained lead auditor for ISO 9001:2018, he successfully oversaw the implementation of the Quality Management System through staff
trainings, internal audits, surveillance audits and management reviews.   

When Performance Contracting and ISO became a Directorate in 2016, he was appointed its pioneer Director. Further, since 2013 he has be coordinating the preparation, negotiation, vetting, implementation and evaluation Performance Contracts between the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Education and the University of Embu of which the University has been in the Excellent Performance Category during evaluations conducted by the Performance Management and Coordination Office in the Office of the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service. That has seen the University to be ranked highly not only among the Educational Institutions but also State Corporations in the country.

Dr. Kirema has advanced training on auditing of different management systems, application and implementation of quality, management by results and implementation of performance management strategies and systems in institutions. He is also an accomplished researcher, publisher and supervisor of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
