University of Embu Celebrates a Historic Year in Sports – 2024/2025
The 2024/2025 academic year has been nothing short of extraordinary for the University of Embu’s Sports Department. From regional leagues to national championships and even global arenas, the university's athletes have showcased resilience, skill, and the true spirit of competition across all disciplines.
Leading the charge was George Mutinda Mutuku, the university’s standout 400m sprinter, who rose from campus competitions to become the national champion with an astonishing time of 44.51 seconds. His victories at the AK Universities Sprints and FISU Qualifiers, along with an impressive showing at the ABSA Kipkeino Classic and Betika National Meet, earned him a spot in the 2025 FISU World University Games in Germany and the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. For the first time in nearly a decade, Kenya will be represented by a complete 400m men’s team—and George, a proud son of University of Embu, is leading that team.
Beyond athletics, the university made a strong showing in team sports. In the 14th Edition of the KUSF National Women’s Championship at Meru University, the Netball Women’s team secured a remarkable second-place finish out of 12 teams, while the Athletics team brought home a bronze medal. The Handball Women’s, Basketball Men, Basketball 3x3 Men, Rollball Men, and Tennis Women all qualified for the national stage—a testament to the depth of talent and preparation across departments.
The University of Embu made headlines during the Embu Mount Kenya Handball League held at Kenya Methodist University. The Handball Women’s team emerged champions, sweeping all their matches, while the Men’s team took second place in the fiercely contested league. In mind sports, the university's Chess team was represented at the Kenya Universities and Colleges Chess Tournament at Kenyatta University by Kyalo Peter and Maurine Wangui. Kyalo advanced to the quarter-finals after a strong round-of-16 win, showing promise for future podium finishes.
Equally inspiring were the university's contributions to disability sports. During the Disability Sports Competitions held at Kenyatta University from 30th November to 1st December, Embu athletes delivered commendable performances. The Scrabble Men’s team finished as runners-up, earning medals for their tactical brilliance. The Chess Women’s team secured third place, and the Dart Men’s team also took bronze, receiving a trophy for their precision and consistency. The Sitting Volleyball team, representing KUSF Central, clinched third place as well, with all players earning medals in recognition of their commitment and teamwork.
Staff members, too, contributed to the university’s sporting legacy by participating in the 8th Edition of the KUSF Central Conference Staff Games at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology. The University of Embu was well represented in Football (Men), Volleyball (Men), and Netball (Women). The Football team emerged champions after an unbeaten run, while the Netball Women secured a strong second-place finish. These games offered a chance not just for competition, but also for networking, wellness, and building unity among university staff.
The 2024/2025 season will be remembered as a turning point for sports at the University of Embu. From the rising star of George Mutuku to team victories and inclusive representation across all levels of ability, the university has shown that excellence in sports is achievable through hard work, unity, and institutional support. As the year closes, the Sports Department celebrates every athlete, coach, the University of Embu administration and supporter who contributed to this success and looks forward to building on this momentum in the seasons ahead.
