The Institute traces its origins to 1982, following a study that proposed the establishment of the Indiana Institute of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition (IIAFN). Around the same period, agricultural leaders in Indiana also identified the need for a structured leadership and skills development program for both emerging and established farmers. These parallel efforts culminated in the formation of IIAFN, which was incorporated in December 1982 as a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing educational and charitable opportunities in agriculture, food, and nutrition.
