Enhancing Utilization of Green Energy at the University of Embu

The University of Embu is enhancing utilization of solar energy as an alternative source of energy especially in the face of growing cost of grid source of energy. This is well aligned in its 2018-2028 Strategic Plan and the Kenya’s Medium Term Plan (MTP) IV of Kenya’s economic blue print Vision 2030. The MTP IV intends to accelerate transition to clean energy, promote energy efficiency and shift to energy auctions as a successor to the feed-in-tariffs policy to address high electricity tariffs. This is also aligned to the AU Agenda 2063 Aspiration 1 (7) that intends to promote “environmentally sustainable climate and resilient economies and communities”.

The University strategic plan has six (6) pillars, and pillar 1 (Infrastructure pillar) emphasizes on Diversifications and Development of Energy Sources. So far, a total of 117kWp grid tied solar system and intends to grow this to 200kWp by 2028. Out of this, the University intend to save up to 30% on electricity bills.

Solar panels installed in various buildings within the University. It displays panels at the Student Hostels and at the Administration Block.
